STEPS AND WAYS FOR ACHIEVING A BETTER WORK- LIFE BALANCE


Being successful at work is important but having a balanced work-life is equally important. Maintaining that balance can be challenging in this busy world. Let's look at following steps and ways that can help you try to maintain that balance.

1.      SET YOUR PRIORITIES IN ORDER

Work, family, friends, and relationship goals - all need to be set in order as that will make it easier for you to focus on one thing at a time. First, you need to figure out, identify and set your priorities. Don’t try to multi-task because it will only make your life all the more complicated.



2. RESPECT YOUR PRIVATE TIME

If you have personal time scheduled, go for it.Don’t let your work take such priority that your personal life suffers from neglect. Don’t let work interrupt it unless something really urgent comes up.



3. TURN OFF THE EMAIL ALERTS

If you are one of those, try switching off the email alerts on your phone when you're away from office. Working people often tend to check or send mails even after their working hours. Give yourself a break in order to free your mind from work.


4. LEARN TO SAY NO

Before saying yes to extra work, always think about other commitments. You don’t need to be rude but you must speak up and learn the power of saying no. Sometimes volunteering to do that extra work to impress your boss is a good idea but don’t make it a habit.


5. LEAVE WORK AT TIME

Just before it’s time for you to leave the office after a stressful day, write down all the tasks or any work related things that you did the entire day. Work needs to stay back in the office. Then turn off your computer and leave for the day. Do not think about work after that as closure is very important to a healthy work-life balance.


6. LOOK AT THE BIGGER PICTURE

Some people are married to work, especially the ones that are self-employed. But look at the bigger picture – what if you lose your job or your business fails? Or what do you plan to do after retirement? All of us need something to fall back on other than the usual work. You should give equal importance to other interests in life - it could be anything such as dancing, photography, gardening or physical activity. Do what makes you happy.


7. SLEEP IS IMPORTANT

Sleep is equally important to perform better at work. The idea is to work smart and not long. Prioritize your task and make sure you finish it in certain amount of time without getting stuck. Stay focused and don’t feel depressed, anxious or irritable because you're tired.


8. BOOK AN ACTIVITY POST-WORK

On a daily basis, try to book a fun activity, something that you look forward to each day after work. It could be anything, such as tennis session with a friend, visiting an art museum, or pampering yourself with a massage. The activity need not be time-consuming, or expensive but something that helps to release stress.


9. PLAN A VACATION

Plan a week-long vacation to freshen up your mind. Taking a break from work is really important because a few days away from the office can help you get re-focused and refreshed. If a week is not possible, then even a long weekend is enough to recharge.


10. JOIN SOCIAL GROUPS

If you’re someone who finds it difficult to socialize due to work commitments, then consider joining a social group. It could be sports-related group, a dance group, or even a singing group. It’s a good idea to meet new friends to divert your mind from work.
